Our family has been here since 1962, when Grandma and Grandpa Abell set up a park for caravans. In 1974, their daughter Irene, and her husband, Jimmy Nairn, bought the place over, and the first chalets were born. Keeping the family tradition alive, Jimmy and Irene's youngest son, Topher, bought the business upon their retirement in 1987, and in 1996, was joined by me, his sister Victoria, and my husband Chris. In 2003, our cousin Kate MacKechnie joined the team, returning to Lochend after a childhood split between Africa and Kent. On the odd busy Saturday, mum and dad - Jimmy and Irene - can still be seen brandishing a cleaning cloth!
Not far from the chalets, in what had been a piggery when Grandpa bought Lochend in 1962, the internationally acclaimed Cook School was established in 2000 by my brother, Nick Nairn. A stylish, state-of-the-art building and five-star visitor attraction, with a small but tantalising shop at reception, it's well worth a visit when you're here.
From landscaping and gardening, to fencing and grass-cutting, we try to do as much maintenance ourselves at Lochend but when our basic skills let us down we have an amazing group of local tradesmen to call on: Bobby Cameron, joiner extraordinaire who has been involved with all the buildings here; Stewart Hollington electrician by trade but with a vast knowledge of all sorts of useful things! John Hutchison, one-man-band plumber who in equal parts praises and despairs of our basic efforts; Alan Hollington carpet fitter and brother of Stewart; Andy Rae, painter, who we see every year due to a rolling maintenance programme; and finally, the builder of foundations and stone work at Lochend, Duncan Kinloch, and his team. We had a big fire at Lochend house in 1995 and everyone pulled together to rebuild it.
Web Design.
It has been a long arduous journey to our new website,
involving 2 company's that didn't work out, so we were delighted
when we hooked up with 'One Space Creative'.
The very talented Simon and Amanda (design and photography) turned
our website fortunes around and have made us very happy with the
outcome. We hope you agree.
Amanda is putting together a wee brochure for us too so look out
for that. http://www.onespacecreative.co.uk
Web Optimisation.
Simon introduced us to John Taylor, a master in his field
and very patient with techno dafties like us! Another pleasure to
meet and work with someone who is passionate about his work and we
couldn't be happier that he's working on our site.
