Ben Gullipen
3 miles, about 2 hours.
This Land Rover track takes you to the top of the Menteith hills
where there are mobile phone masts at about 425 meters. The view is
360 degrees of spectacular scenery from the Forth Valley to the
Trossachs National park. Take the A81 to Callander; 1 mile past
Loch Ruskie you will see a dirt lay-by on the right hand side,
cross the road and over the padlocked metal gate. The Land Rover
track will take you to the top, only one more gate to climb.
Fairy Knowe/Doon
Hill
2 miles, about 1 hour
An easy walk through magnificent oak and coppiced woods, with Scots
Pine at the top - a nice one to take the children on to look out
for the fairies.
Forestry Commission cark park at the start of the walk at Balleich,
just over a mile out of Aberfoyle. Aberfoyle has public toilets at
the Discovery Centre.
Ben A'an
4 miles, about 3-4 hours to give you time to enjoy the
scenery.
Height is 1520ft. Highly recommended, as you get stunning
views for not much effort. The steepest step nearing the
rocky top is about 3ft. The whole walk follows a well
trodden path but you can also do a varying degrees of
rock climbs on the south face.
Forestry Commission car park on the A821 at the north of Loch
Achray, opposite the Tigh Mhor (turreted Disney type building!) The
nearest facilities are about one mile from the car
park at the Loch Katrine Steam Boat Pier
http://www.lochkatrine.com/steamship.html - there
is a café and toilets there.
The Fault trail/The Highland
Edge
4 miles, 3 hours.
This is the geographical fault line which runs from the south end
of Loch Lomond to Stonehaven on the north east coast. The Scots use
it as a boundary between the Lowlands and the Highlands and this is
very apparent on the summit.
Braeval Car park on the A81 is under a mile from Aberfoyle and 4.5
miles from Lochend.
The Callander Crags
4.5 miles, about 4 hours, with an ascent of
300m
This interesting and old walkway takes you up over the village of
Callander and leads to the very spectacular Bracklin falls. There
are various routes to choose from but most will take you through
some fine woodland. There are some exposed drops near the top and
having taken our small children, it's probably a better walk for
the over 7's!
Plenty of eating places and public toilets in Callander, park in
the car park at the south side of the village.
Inversnaid Loch
Lomond
2 miles, 1-2 hours
On this fairly easy walk you do a bit of the West Highland Way,
pass Rob Roy's Cave (often slippery) and follow the circle of the
Inversnaid Nature Reserve which is cared for by the RSPB. At
the side of the Hotel there are lovely waterfalls - so a bit of
something for everyone on this walk. Park at the Hotel car park and
this is where the walk begins. Best point to see the falls is from
the small pier bellow the car park.
