Scotland’s forested mountains are packed with world-class biking trails, and the Trossachs has some of the best of them. Here are the best of the rest – all within a highly scenic two-hour drive of Lochend.
The best Scottish mountain-biking centres and trails within a daytrip of Lochend Chalets
Glentress, Borders (1hr 40mins)
With nearly miles of dedicated single track winding its way through Glentress Forest in the Tweed Valley, this fabulous mountain-biking centre is one of eight such centres in The Borders, and the unofficial home of Scottish mountain-biking. There are graded pistes for all levels, with one-mile Spooky Wood worth the drive alone, featuring 18 jumps, 17 tabletops, 4 rock drops and twelve 180-degree bermed bends.
Nevis Range nr Fort William (2 hours)
Just along from Ben Nevis, on the same hill used by skiiers (link to Further Afield/Skiing) in winter, Nevis Range has a fantastic mix of gentle forest trails and white-knuckle downhills, including the 1.75-mile World Championship trail that drops 555 exhilarating metres from the top of the gondola. 4 minutes 35 seconds is the time to beat!
Wolftrax, Laggan (2 hours)
On the western edge of Cairngorm National Park, this great centre near Newtonmore has a couple of cool skills areas, and 20 miles of graded pistes through Laggan forest, with fabulous views of the Monadhliath Hills.
