SNOW SPORTS FURTHER AFIELD FROM LOCHEND
We have some great skiing within a 75-minute drive of Lochend, and with changing weather patterns bringing huge amounts of snow to the Highlands and Cairngorm, resorts are increasingly investing in lifts and resort facilities. Of course, the skiing is not as extensive as say, the Alps, but there’s more than enough for a couple of fantastic days out from Lochend.
You could hit any of Scotland’s five ski resorts from Lochend, though Glencoe is our local, only about 75 minutes from home. Here is a quick guide to where you could ski while staying at Lochend.
The best Scottish ski resorts close to Lochend
GLENCOE (75 MINUTES)
Spectacular mountain landscape, and a real reputation for great off-piste powder, well into April and even May. Home to Flypaper, the steepest pisted run in Scotland, Glencoe also has a free sledging area with sledges provided, and a really lovely cafe with licensed bar at the bottom serving homemade soups, venison burgers, coffees and cakes.
GLENSHEE (2 HOURS)
Spread across two sides of a valley on the eastern edge of Cairngorm National Park, Glenshee‘s USP is definitely its size – 22 lifts, 36 pisted runs – with something for everyone across its varied slopes and terrain park.
NEVIS RANGE, NR FORT WILLIAM (2HRS 15MINS)
Great for off-piste, Nevis Range has superb Highland views and the best backcountry skiing in Scotland – as well as some great freeride ski classes, and a gondola whizzing you up the mountain above the terrifying downhill mountain-biking track.
CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN AT AVIEMORE (2HRS 30MINS)
This is a great resort for beginners because it has a huge, very gently sloping plateau with loads of beginner slopes right at the snowsure top, plus Scotland’s only funicular railway to whizz you up. Lots of good blacks too, as well as White Lady, perhaps the best red in Scotland. We also love the wee Cas Bar at the bottom: roaring log fire, cracking atmosphere, it’s as cute as any bar in the Alps.
THE LECHT 2090 (2HRS 40MINS)
A small, quiet resort on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, The Lecht 2090 is great for wee’uns, with a magic carpet lift and tonnes of short, gentle pistes low down in front of the cafe.
SNOW FACTOR, BRAEHEAD (1HR)
If you’re here in summer and still fancy a ski, then take yourself off to Xscape in Braehead on the outskirts of Glasgow for Scotland’s only real-snow indoor slope. There is also tobogganing slope, eateries galore, as well as a cinema, crazy golf course and aerial adventure course
