TOURING DAYS IN SCOTLAND FROM LOCHEND
DAY TRIP TO EDINBURGH
Where to start? First, perhaps, by saying that while Lochend feels incredibly secluded, in fact, we’re only about 75 minutes from the Royal Mile – or maybe two hours if you take the one-hour train from Dunblane or Stirling to Waverley Station.
The best things to do in Edinburgh
And what a city: riddled with intriguing vaults and wynds (alleys), Auld Reekie is a brilliant city to explore on foot (though the open-top tour buses at Waverly Station will try to tell you otherwise!), a place of ancient beauty and elegant vistas, cracking pubs and buzzing arts scene, classy cafes, shops and museums.
The one-mile, cobbled Royal Mile running between Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle is unmissable, especially in August when the Fringe Festival – the world’s largest arts festival – is in full swing, and the pavements are jam-packed with street performers.
You could climb up the Scott Monument on Princes Street for a wonderful view, out to the Firth of Forth, or visit the optical illusion museum and camera obscura on the Royal Mile ( a good one with kids), or wander the beautiful botanical gardens, or just enjoy the shops on George Street or Princes Street.
Beyond that, Forever Edinburgh is a really useful guide to things to do in the capital, as is Time Out.
